Shear-Induced Heterogeneity in Associating Polymer Gels: Role of Network Structure and Dilatancy.

چکیده
We study associating polymer gels under steady shear using Brownian dynamics simulation to explore the interplay between the network structure, dynamics, and rheology. For a wide range of flow rates, we observe the formation of shear bands with a pronounced difference in shear rate, concentration, and structure. A striking increase in the polymer pressure in the gradient direction with shear, along with the inherently large compressibility of the gels, is shown to be a crucial factor in destabilizing homogeneous flow through shear-gradient concentration coupling. We find that shear has only a modest influence on the degree of association, but induces marked spatial heterogeneity in the network connectivity. We attribute the increase in the polymer pressure (and polymer mobility) to this structural reorganization.

Effect of pH on Structural Properties of Heat-Induced Whey Protein Gels
Formation and structure of whey protein heat-induced gels (100 mg mL-1) through heat treatment at 80 °C and pH modifications at three pH values of acidic (2), isoelectric (5.6) and neutral (7) were studied. The obtained results indicated that the nature of the primary gel networks was different at each pH value. The heat-induced gels produced at pH of 2 and 7, had acceptab...
متن کاملVesicle--biopolymer gels: networks of surfactant vesicles connected by associating biopolymers.
The effect of adding an associating biopolymer to surfactant vesicles and micelles is studied using rheology and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The associating polymer is obtained by randomly tethering hydrophobic alkyl chains to the backbone of the polysaccharide, chitosan. Adding this polymer to surfactant vesicles results in a gel; that is, the sample transforms from a Newtonian liqu...
متن کاملShear-induced structure in polymer-clay nanocomposite solutions.
The equilibrium structure and shear response of model polymer-clay nanocomposite gels are measured using X-ray scattering, light scattering, optical microscopy, and rheometry. The suspensions form physical gels via the "bridging" of neighboring colloidal clay platelets by the polymer, with reversible adsorption of polymer segments onto the clay surface providing a short-range attractive force. ...
متن کاملExtreme strain localization and sliding friction in physically associating polymer gels.
Model physically associating gels deformed in shear over a wide range of reduced rates displayed evidence of strain localization. The nonlinear stress responses and inhomogeneous velocity profiles observed during shear rheometry coupled with particle tracking velocimetry were associated with the occurrence of rate-dependent banding and fracture-like responses in the gel. Scaling law analysis fr...
متن کاملExperimental verification of fracture mechanism for polymer gels with controlled network structure.
Recently, polymer gels have drawn much attention as scaffolds for regenerative medicines, soft actuators, and functional membranes. These applications need tough and robust polymer gels as represented by the double network gels. To fully understand this mechanism and develop further advanced polymer gels, we need to fully understand the molecular origin of fracture energy for conventional polym...
